Dr Nigel Sutherland

Cardiologist & Cardiac Imaging Specialist

Dr Nigel Sutherland is a Cardiologist and Cardiac Imaging Specialist with advanced subspecialty training in echocardiography, cardiac CT, and cardiac MRI. His clinical and research focus centres on advanced echocardiographic techniques, including myocardial strain and 3D imaging, as well as genetic and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies.

Nigel graduated from the University of Melbourne with distinction (MD), earning a place on the Dean’s Honours List and receiving multiple academic prizes including the Austin Clinical School Award. He completed his specialist cardiology training across the Royal Melbourne Hospital, MonashHeart, and Northern Health, before undertaking advanced cardiac imaging fellowship training at Alfred Health.

He currently holds appointments as a Consultant Cardiologist at Northern Health and Northern Imaging Victoria, where he leads the Cardiac Imaging (CT/MRI) service, and as a Visiting Medical Officer at Alfred Health’s Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic. A widely published researcher, he has presented his work both nationally and internationally, winning the ACC 2023/WCC Heart Tank award for Cardiovascular Investigation.

Robert is a Cardiac Sonographer and Quality Assurance Lead at one of Melbourne’s most respected private hospital networks, where he ensures consistently high imaging standards. As a member of its Structural Heart Team, he also assists in intraprocedural echocardiography during complex interventions in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory.

At Melbourne Echo Clinic, Robert applies this hospital-grade expertise in the community setting, delivering high-quality cardiac imaging to patients across Victoria.
